Greetings again... thought it was about time for an update or a progress report or whatever you want to call it...
For the past six weeks I have been in the studio producing an album for Mr Brendan Welch, more info on it's release date etc to follow... a damn fine songwriter. For now I am back to strumming and scribbling and swimming around my room while an album slowly takes shape but there are a few things coming up over the next month that I would like to bring to yr attention... On Sunday the 25th of November I will be headlining a benefit show at the East Brunswick club to raise money for young Callum Robbins who was born with a very rare disease called type 1 SMA. Callum is the son of musician/producer J Robbins, a former member of the band Jawbox who were a big musical influence on me. J has also produced a record for the excellent Blueline Medic who are also playing on the night as well as A Death in the Family and Lead Sketch Union. Please come on down to hear some great bands and to help make a big difference in the lives of a family coping with this rare condition... You might hear a few Jawbox or Burning Airlines covers, you might hear me singing out front of Blueline Medic, you might win yourself a never-released double 12" vinyl of The Answer to both your Questions or one of the many other goodies in the raffle....
After that I will be heading up to Sydney for Homebake. I'll be on the Dome Stage from 8 till 9pm, very much looking forward to it, haven't played a solo set in Sydney for a while.
And then.... more swimming....

Walt Disney
Damn, that tour went too fast. And we had a blast. And now perhaps I should consider submitting that to Don Henley for the next Eagles album. Ker-ching! And so... Thank YOU as always for coming along and making the shows happen, thanks to Deloris for being both a good and bad influence on us and thank you to our crew for always getting up earlier and working harder than everybody else....Another ten shows would have been nice but we look forward to the next tour and the one after that...
But for now... There will be no such thing as spare moments. All of the possibilities and probabilities that will one day make up my solo record are to be cryogenically suspended for a month or so while I produce an album for another Melbourne artist (more on that later). Never fear... It may all turn out for the best. While I am hard at work in the studio Walt Disney will be holding court with my creative unconsciousness and I may learn something...
The weather will surely improve (but hopefully not too much for my grandchildren) and we will soon have an opportunity for some man-made-political-climate-change as well (which may make it worth considering grandchildren)... Oh, I still remember when the poor, doomed fool used the words 'Alarmist Theory'.... so many defining moments. Thanks for the memories. Get the man his pyjamas. If you would like to be kept abreast of the aforementioned possibilities and probabilities then please take the time to visit my space and make yourself known to the powers that be. Then turn the internet off and go put your face in a book. There is much to think about...
See you at homebake.

Tour, life and the rest.
We really are pretty hopeless on the blog front aren't we. Rhetorical.

So, the Murmur Years...well,I guess they are complete now with more than we could have imagined... 5 albums, a double album of what PD calls 'pure self indulgence' (b-sides), a DVD , a reissue of early E.P's (easy to forget that one) and a 'retrospective compilation'... And Im not sure how I feel about it. Its very neat and tidy and rather than a full stop, there's going to be a comma now while Paul does the solo album. Clint and I have forced ourselves into exile for a while really or at least some sort of sabbatical. It sounded good on paper but what does one do with ones' self after ones' entire adult life up to this point has been spent in various rehearsal and recording studios, on many and varied forms of transport and stages about the place together participating in the cycle of writing, recording and touring. Rhetorical again. I do take some strange pleasure in admitting that as ramshackle as they'll have you believe this rock n roll lifestyle is, there really are some very stringent structures present that I have come to cling to. What to do, what to do...

Well, luckily there's a tour we are in the midst of at the moment and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed The Forum on Friday night. Such a grand room and full of people who sang at the tops of their voices and gave us such a good feeling. I am really excited that we decided to record the show. Over the years there have been many requests for a live album and so we finally got it together to do something about it... I look forward to hearing the show back complete with your singing and your general presence recorded for posterity - as PD mentioned on the night - anything you say will be held against you. We will be sure to keep y'all informed of the progress on this live recording...

Anyway, we are only 2 shows in and we are really looking forward to revisiting The Kingdom this weekend along with Perth and Fremantle. I hope you enjoy the shows and that you forgive us for not being able to play the song you had hoped for - if you had any idea of the heat that the setlist caused us in the reherasals... if you take photos feel free to send them in and we'll have them put up on the site in the photography section which is being updated nowish.
OK, more soon...really.

Surprising little bugger...
Well I guess it's about that time again eh?.... The two shows at the Corner at the beginning of May were most enjoyable, thank you to all who came and sang along.. Then about six weeks went missing.. I'm sure they'll turn up somewhere soon.. Preferably in a notebook.. We made a video for The Futurist on a very cold day by the seaside, once again Bart was at the helm and did a bang-up job.. I'm sure you can summons it to the nearest screen at the push of a button... The Murmur years comes out in a few weeks and I must say it's a surprising little bugger... I listened to the final master the other night and all I could think was 'Where in ---'s name did that come from?'.. I'd somehow forgotten that we'd made five albums already, it's as if my mind was somewhere else the whole time.. Well, it usually was/is...it's usually on the next new song.. Anyways, it was a strange and proud moment and I hope that you'll enjoy listening to it, we think of it as being a good SFK mix-tape of the first five albums... The artwork's real nice too... We're touring around the country in September to commemorate The Murmur Years so we hope to see you there... We intend to take our entire catalogue and turn it upside down and shake it around for awhile...Should be lots of fun. We are taking our good friends Deloris with us as well, if you haven't heard their 'Ten Lives' album then you are missing out and you'll be missing out even more when they're singin' it at your face... And from the bottom of our hearts we thank you. Again. For making the Murmur years possible. And we thank you in advance....

Panic at the Disco
Ok, Ok, Ok... How long, oh lord, how long?... Never let the truth get in the way of an attention-grabbing headline, even if it means causing damage to someone's years of hard work...or just the major pain in the arse of having to explain yourself to everybody repeatedly...
I speak of course, of the story that appeared in a few papers over the weekend stating 'Something for Kate frontman Paul Dempsey is splitting from the group after more than a decade to focus on a solo career'.........?!!
If people had read on they would have seen where I stress that it won't mean the end of the group but hey, the damage is done by the first sentence (which, it would appear, is as far as most people read) and I have been answering people's shocked queries ever since... People I know and people I don't know...
Let me state right now that no one is SPLITTING from anything. I've been talking about doing a record by myself for years and after five SFK albums in a row it seems like the right time to take a step to the left and do something different for a while.
Might I also add that my decision to do this now has nothing to do with Bernard Fanning's solo album (bless 'im) and that some journalists just can't resist the temptation to draw their own erroneous connections between completely disparate things and pass them off as if they were actually mentioned during the conversation...
I'm not in the habit of complaining about crap like this but I've had to explain the truth of the situation and the inaccuracy of the headline to too many people so I just wanted to set the record straight.

ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz..... I just need a cup of tea...... And some sympathy....

In more positive news - I am excited about gathering up all the ideas for this solo record and getting down to business to present you all with another masterpiece of moody, mopey, whingeing, depressing, self-important, cut-your-wrists-right-the-fuck-off, complaint-rock.... What?!.... Who said that?...

Cactifornia

Friends,

Today we have won a great victory against the forces of pachycereus pringlei, blossfeldia liliputiana, carnegiea gigantia and every other vicious footsoldier of the savage succulent army that tried to get the better of us under the blazing Strathmerton sun. It was truly a colossal struggle and some losses and injuries were sustained but.......well, yes and we are proud to present the video for our new single 'California'. Many thanks are due to our fearless leader Bart Borghesi who yelled 'Mandate?! Who needs a mandate?!!' and led us gallantly into battle and our valiant hero Hamish who danced and mocked his spiny assailants with all the nimbleness of Fred Astair and all the hungover good looks of a young Rob Lowe.... or even Emilio Estevez (who I've heard is on the comeback trail).

The good people of Strathmerton applauded our brave displays and even rewarded us with (far too many) cold beverages between skirmishes and for that we thank them.

We would also like to tip our helmets to the courageous leaders of the catcaceae forces, they say it's not whether you win or lose but how you play the game and although victory is today ours, we acknowledge them for the stout-hearted warriors they are.... there is a code afterall, people... Many of us are still nursing bites, stings, stab-wounds and sunburn but we shall live to fight another day..... we hope you enjoy our efforts. And here's to a lasting peace,

PD

PS. If you do ever find yourself in Strathmerton, Victoria then drop into Cactus Country and survey the scene of one the greatest battles in recent history and then drop into the railway hotel to raise a toast and hear stories of the fallen. Peace.

Rain Dance
Happy New Year! Damn I can't believe that 2006 is over already, time flies when you're in the good seats at the too-much-fun-club... But 2007 is looking pretty good from here - The big day out starts in a couple of weeks which should be a blast as always and we are making plans for some more headline shows around the country sometime after that... There are bits and pieces of new music starting to pile up in different corners of the room, we intend to make some sense of those.... In between all of this Clint has been moonlighting as drummer for Melbourne's Souls on Board, Steph has been dividing her time between her camera and her laptop and I have been doing recording or playing bit parts on albums by Deloris and The Nation Blue and others to come... A quick thanks to everyone who came to a show, listened to a record or sent us a supportive email in 2006, we appreciate it and we look forward to wrestling 2007 kicking and screaming to the ground and doing a rain dance on it's bones...

random gibberish
Ok, we should get a bit more disciplined about this blog business. It's a wonderful opportunity to spread my random gibberish into the public domain and I should be taking advantage of it!... So the Desert Lights tour came to a wonderful end with a set for Live at the Chapel in hometown Melbourne and a celebration that went into the wee wee hours. Sorry to those in Griffith for the late cancellation, we will endeavour to get to your neck of the woods as soon as we can. Thank you to everyone who came out to shows on the tour, every night was a hell of a lot of fun, there was a whole different energy on this tour that I can't explain but needless to say we had a blast and it wouldn't have happened without you who came along.

Big thanks also to Expatriate for being our accomplices for the whole tour and sharing their sweet, synthy sounds with us night after night. Hard to find four nicer gents to spend eight weeks on the road with. Thanks also to Kashmir for coming all the way from Denmark to join the party for a few nights, always a pleasure to catch up with those guys and always astounding to watch them play. If any of you missed Expatriate or Kashmir due to late train, lost keys, shrunken washing, misguided cab driver, terrorist threat, changed climate, aggressive tele-marketer or the like, you would not be ill-advised to pay a visit to your favourite record store and make a couple of purchases.

Happy to report that since finishing the tour and having a bit of time to scratch ourselves there have been a few flickers of new songs appearing on the horizon and I have got the urge to keep my head down and try to bring them ever closer. It's a good feeling when this happens and the buzz of new ideas and new music starts to creep into your every waking moment.

Hope to see you all in the summertime, Homebake, Big Day Out.... Lots to look forward to. Hope you're all having a good day.

Spring
I love being on tour. I love eating weird food at odd hours. I love waiting around car parks. I love sleeping in different boxes every night. I love the non-stop variety show madness of the tour van. I love the way all of the hours in the day are skewed and bent and pulled inexorably towards the moment of the show. And the shows so far have been more fun than any i can remember. And it's spring.

Desert Lights Tour Blog begins
Tour... back to blisters and black feet, california rolls for breakfast and lobby calls. its been incredibly difficult to pick the setlists for this tour. after 5 albums -so many songs, not enough time. its pretty hard to try and be objective about which songs from which albums etc to play

Sydney,ACT and NSW were great. Really been enjoying the atmosphere at the shows and playing the new songs. Am looking forward to The Tivoli tonight - have heard very fine things about it...OK,more soon.

Logical,fine and normal?
Well well....here we are with another album out there... and I must say there are days where it all seems logical, fine and normal and then there are days where I cant remember getting through to this point as I never thought we would for a long time there.

Anyway, what is always quite surreal -no matter how many times weve done it- is meeting the people who support us and buy our records - im sure its quite a surreal exchange for both parties- and for the record I think everyone is charming and very polite. Anyway, I wanted to say thankyou for listening and hopefully liking what you hear. We are v.happy with Desert Lights and want to get out there and play it around the country now that its out there.

I also wanted to say in response to the many emails we get regarding all ages shows that we do keep this in mind - its very hard to find venues that will do them- At the moment only our Rockhampton show in QLD is all ages which is why we are trying to let people know about any TV or instore performances that have no age restrictions-I know its not a full show but its a start. We havent forgotten. CD Live and Federation Square were good last week.

Here are some photos from the promo trail... Oh, and if you're in Melbourne this week with nothing better to do on Thursday night, perhaps wander down to the Evelyn Hotel where some kind of SFK cover band will be playing under the name Transparanoia....see you there

Feels great to have the new album out...i feel like I can separate my head from it a bit now and start thinking about new songs...not sure if that makes sense to anyone but it's a good thing...looking forward to going on tour and playing the whole album..feels like a new phase, feels like we are playing together differently somehow.. hard to put my finger on but again, it's a good thing..new songs feel great and old songs feel new again...i'm finding so much good music out there at the moment and all I feel like doing is playing my guitar...thanks to everyone who came to the annandale and the instore...hope you like what you're hearing.

Back Home
Back home now after tour. Exhausted but happy. All felt a bit too short to me but there will be plenty more shows in the next 12 months I'm sure. Our attention has turned now to the album and getting all the artwork and extra stuff finished. We've been listening back to some of the shows and picking out some things that may turn up somewhere... Looking forward to getting the album out there and hitting the road again but I guess we have to give Clint's hands time to heal... PD

the first of June
Well,we havent played for 5 days. I feel odd and just for the record, Ive lost hearing in one ear for a few days now so if the bass is a little strange you know why. Tours are funny like that- you start to get into the rhythm of the whole thing (bad pun for a bass player I know-it wasnt intentional) and then they stop. This tour is especially brief too - Adelaide, Perth and my old home town, Fremantle and its over. It'll be a while until another tour- we want to wait until the album is out there in the world and people can understand what it is we're on about before we play the whole thing live. Will they understand what it is we're on about??

Reporting 29th May
3 shows to go... and I am loving being back out touring. Although my hands didn't agree after the first couple of shows. My fingers were bleeding after the first one at the Northcote Social Club. All good now, the blisters have now turned to calluses. Had a great time at the last few shows. First we had the Prince Of Wales where I got to hear all of you singing "Happy Birthday" to Paul, then the celebrations after which was always going to end up finishing late, but not as late as Damn Arms... Friday night at the Peninsula Lounge was always going to be a fun one. Kind of a homecoming for Paul and I (or maybe just me).A show that mum and dad could get along to without complaining that it's too far away.....big apologies to friends for not sticking around for a drink but we had a 7am flight to Darwin in the morning!! After getting home and sleeping for 2 hours it was to the airport to fly to Darwin to play the Bass in the Grass Festival where we had an awesome time sweating it out in the heat, now back in Melbourne....freezing.....for a few days anyway. Halfway
About halfway through the tour now. Having a blast. Thank you to everyone who has come to shows so far and helped to make this the most fun tour i can remember. Last night at the POW was something I won't soon forget... Looking forward to the other half of the country now, get down early and check out Damn Arms, it'll do you good... PD

May 22 Part 1.
So we are back on tour. Vans and planes and setlists, hotels and early morning fire evacuations, chest infections and ginger wine, adrenalin and dirty feet, group check in and lobby call and cut up fruit I never eat. These are some of the things that mean we are on tour. I dont mean it to sound glum - its not -its just that its the small things that sometimes signify this change. Seriously though, so far its been the most fun I've had on stage in a long while- All the shows have been fantastic and its so enjoyable to play these new songs. Also really enjoying Paul's version of Born to Run - its like a little trip to New Jersey every night in cut off shorts and stillettos...yeah.... SA
